Luer lock and Toomey liposuction cannulas are both used for syringe liposuction and fat harvesting. The cannula tip can be identical; what differs is the hub, the part that connects to the syringe. The right choice comes down to the syringe on your tray and the diameter you need.

Luer lock liposuction cannulas
A luer lock cannula threads onto any standard luer-lock syringe, so the cannula and syringe stay locked together while you work. It is the usual choice for tumescent infiltration with a syringe, facial and fine-area work, and fat grafting, where small diameters and small syringes are the norm. CLINIMED makes its luer hub from the smallest diameters up to and including Ø3.0 mm.
What makes it a Secure Luer™
On a standard luer cannula, the hub only meets the syringe at the threads, and the joint can work loose as the cannula is moved and turned during a case. The CLINIMED Secure Luer™ hub adds a recess machined into the underside of the hub body. As you lock the cannula on, the outer collar of the luer-lock syringe seats into that recess, so the hub and syringe are held together around the collar as well as at the threads. It is designed to:
- Keep the cannula from working loose on the syringe during use
- Add strength and rigidity at the connection, so the cannula and syringe handle as one piece
The Secure Luer™ recess is a CLINIMED design and is exclusive to CLINIMED cannulas. It fits standard luer-lock syringes; no special syringe is needed.
The same luer cannula also runs on a CLINIMED infiltration handle, and on a MicroAire® PAL® or Nouvag® Liposurg® Artist handpiece through the PAL luer adapter. Those CLINIMED handles and adaptors have their own exclusive feature on the male luer: the AZURING™ blue silicone O-ring, designed for a tighter fit with less vibration and leakage.
Toomey liposuction cannulas
A Toomey cannula fits Toomey-tip syringes such as the 60 cc Monoject Toomey. Because Toomey syringes are large, the Toomey hub is the usual choice for syringe liposuction and larger-volume fat harvesting, and CLINIMED makes it in larger diameters than the luer hub, up to Ø5.0 mm on many tips.
Already own luer cannulas but prefer a Toomey syringe? The Toomey syringe to luer lock cannula adaptor lets you use them together.
One listing, every hub
CLINIMED does not list a separate product for each hub. Every cannula is made to order, and you choose the hub on the product page: Secure Luer™, Toomey, ACME, MicroAire PAL compatible, Nouvag compatible, VASER® compatible or Alma BeautiFill® compatible, depending on the tip and diameter. So to order a luer lock or Toomey cannula, pick the tip first, then the hub:
- Liposuction & fat harvesting cannulas
- Tumescent infiltration cannulas
- Fat re-injection & fat grafting cannulas
- Cannula sets
Every hub is colour-coded by diameter, not by hub type, so read the hub first, then the colour. The hub types guide and the Hub & Compatibility Guide cover all seven hubs.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a luer lock and a Toomey liposuction cannula?
The hub. A luer lock cannula threads onto luer-lock syringes and luer handles; a Toomey cannula fits Toomey-tip syringes such as the 60 cc Monoject Toomey. The tip and ports can be the same.
What is a Secure Luer™ cannula?
It is CLINIMED's luer lock cannula hub. A recess under the hub body takes the outer collar of the luer-lock syringe, which is designed to keep the cannula from working loose and to add strength and rigidity at the connection. The design is exclusive to CLINIMED.
Do CLINIMED luer cannulas fit other brands' luer syringes?
Yes. The Secure Luer™ hub fits standard luer-lock syringes.
What is the largest luer lock cannula?
Ø3.0 mm. For larger diameters choose the Toomey, ACME or a power-system hub.
Can I use a luer cannula with a Toomey syringe?
Yes, with the Toomey syringe to luer lock cannula adaptor.
Can I use the same cannula on a power-assisted handpiece?
Luer cannulas can, through the PAL luer adapter on a MicroAire PAL or Nouvag Liposurg Artist handpiece. For a direct fit, order the cannula with the MicroAire PAL compatible hub (Ø2.0 mm and up).
